Ultralight backpacking
What is ultralight backpacking?
Ultralight hiking, or UL hiking for short, is not about using the lightest gear possible. It´s about finding gear AT THE LOWEST WEIGHT POSSIBLE THAT CAN PERFORM ITS INTENDED PURPOSE ADEQUATELY WHILE AT THE SAME TIME PROVIDING A COMFORT LEVEL THAT IS ACCEPTABLE TO YOU.
UL hiking has become increasingly popular because it will reduce the weight that you are carrying which has the benefit of you being able to hike longer before getting fatigued. It is geared towards people that are more interested in hiking (longer distances) rather than spending a lot of time at camp. There are a basically two ways to lower your backpacking weight: 1. Find gear at the lowest weight possible. 2. Find gear that can perform multiple tasks. For example, one of my favorite pieces of gear is the Six Moon Designs Gatewood Cape. It acts as an enclosed tarp(no floor or bugnetting) and also as a poncho. So in certain weatherscenarios I do not have to bring a rainjacket and rainpants. That´s quite a big weight savings as well as less stuff in your backpack. See you on the trail, Stephan "Astrahikes" Szöllös
