"Three for three". It is a phrase coined by ultralight hiker Jörgen Johansson and equates to the goal during 3 season hiking of keeping your Big 3( shelter, back pack and sleep system) below 3 kilos. For my fellow hikers across the Atlantic that comes to 6.6 pounds.
I personally think this is a great way to get started on your ultralight journey. My reasoning is that looking at your Big 3 for suitable replacements is the easiest AND most substantial way to reduce your gear weight. Simply look at the stuff that weighs the most since that is where you will be able to reduce weight the most. While sawing off the handle of your toothbrush is definitely admirable(everything counts!), it is not where you will see a massive change in your gear weight.
